Non retro-reflective licence plates present a particular challenge to licence plate recognition systems as they cannot be illuminated by traditional low power pulsed illuminators. The Sidewinder Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera overcomes this problem and is designed to be used with high powered flood IR sources. The Sidewinder has an integrated band pass interference filter to match the wavelength of the illuminator and exclude extraneous illumination effects such as vehicle headlights, street lighting, and produce crisp clear images for ANPR engines to process. The Sidewinder can be used as a standalone automatic number plate recognition system, or fixed between C3 Series ANPR camera and its mount, comprising one fully operational ANPR solution. The combined unit provides unmatched capabilities to read all types of mixed retro and non retro-reflective number plates. This is a particular problem in the UAE and other countries where mixed plate formats are used. In the above scenario, the Sidewinder camera captures monochrome images for the automatic plate recognition engine to process while the donor camera provides matching colour overview or contextual images.
The Sidewinder and the donor camera act as two independent ANPR units allowing different configurations and set up to be used for each of them. Unmatched solutions for one or several applications at the same time can be created by a donor and a Sidewinder joint system.
The Sidewinder ANPR camera is sealed within a 6mm aluminium milled case to be totally waterproof. The casing is manufactured from aluminium for an extremely tough and durable finish acting as well as a joining part for the Sidewinder and the donor camera system. The main camera feature is 18x optical zoom capability which allows the same camera module to be used for different solutions without costly re-lensing. ANPR camera settings can be interrogated, controlled and changed by bi-directional communications with a computer and operator friendly Graphics User Interface (GUI) allowing easy maintenance and fault finding.
